In December 2015 my husband was treated for infection in a root canal. It was very resistant and he took clindamycin for two weeks. About two weeks later our young granddaughter come to visit. She had symptoms of C. Diff (but we were unaware of that as was her mother. All of us thought she had a stomach virus and since it was the holidays didn’t want her to stay home.) About a week later my husband becomes very ill: fever, aches, chills, diarrhea. Of course, we assume he has caught the grandchild’s stomach virus. I dose him with Pepto Bismal and Immodium but after a week he still very sick and getting weaker. We see our family doctor who immediately suspects C. Diff and begins Flagella. He responds well and after 5 days is symptom free and we think that is is. He continues the prescribed antibiotic until finished. Seven days after the last pill, he becomes violently ill. He is sick all night. The next morning is Saturday so we decide to go to Urgent Care. He doesn’t make it to the car. He faints (due to being dehydrated) twice, I call 911, he ends up in the hospital for 3 days. He is now put on Vancomycin. He again feels better after a few days of the antibiotic. He finishes the regimen. A week later, he is ill again. It just so happens that he has an appointment with a GI doctor so he tests for C. Diff and once again starts on Vancomycin. The same scenario results so now he is facing his 4th bout of C. Diffs . This time the doctor puts him on Dificid. This antibiotic seemed to make him feel better sooner, however, one week after the last pill, he is sick again. He ended up in the hospital and on Vancomycin and Flagella again. The GI doctor decided the the only recourse was to have a FMT, which he had yesterday. We are praying that this treatment is successful.
